This week’s challenge is to find this small plant on the Bath Rd verge by Green Lane entrance. The rain has made it extra hard as some of the flowers in my photos from Saturday have gone, but there are still a few buds hanging on. The leaves smell strongly of mint. It caught my eye as the patches of wild basil flowers (photos 4) growing further along this verge were sadly mown in the Summer and the splash of colour made me wonder if there was some regrowth. But this is a different, though related plant and despite its name it isn’t common. Alongside the similar lesser calamint it is in decline and being late flowering species they are especially vulnerable to early mowing. With a bit of protection let’s help make “common” an appropriate description for this lovely plant.
