Wood anemones are white star-shaped flowers, often seen covering the floor of mature deciduous woodland they are an ancient-woodland-indicator plant. If you spot it while you're out exploring, it could be a sign you're standing in a rare and special habitat. So it's wonderful I found these in Colerne near Trout Lake.
Hoverflies are thought to favour this plant and to be significant in pollinating the species.
The wood anemone is named after the Greek wind god, Anemos, who sent his namesakes, the anemones, in early spring to herald his coming. This legend gives the flower its other common name of 'Windflower'.
